Bi-fold doors can be used in many different ways and places...

    • Many early examples of conservatories incorporate double French doors as a way to not only provide access but also let in light and air. Integrating bi-fold doors into a conservatory significantly enhances the level of access, light and air permitted and that is why more and more homeowners are moving away from the norm of French doors and specifying their bi-folding counterparts when investing in a new conservatory.  Bi-fold doors are particularly suited to a lean-to style of conservatory as the shape and dimensions of the latter often allow more scope for wider bi-fold doors with three or more panes.

    • Orangeries with brick-built columns and an external cornice are arguably the best canvas for a multi-pane bi-fold door. The typically rectangular shape of orangeries lends itself perfectly to a bi-fold door of up to 7-panes wide which acts as an easily removable divide between your home and garden. In seconds you can open up a full wall and blur the boundaries between outdoor and indoor living – a bi-fold door’s ease of operation is impressive and the divide can be reinstated as quickly as it was removed. A bi-fold door is commonly installed on the widest facet of an orangery but some homeowners actually choose to incorporate more than one bi-fold so the room is even more versatile.

    • Bi-fold doors can be fitted to the main part of a property in the same way that sliding patio and double French doors are often used. Internal space may be at a premium so the door can be manufactured to ‘open out’ which, as the name suggests, means that when the door panes concertina they group on the outside. However, if you’d rather and space allows, the same door can also be made to ‘open-in’. Living rooms and kitchens are the two most common rooms to be augmented by a bi-fold but, equally, these doors have been used at particularly luxurious properties as a grand way to access first floor balconies.

    • To be classed as a ‘permitted development’ and be exempt from planning permission, conservatories must, among other things, have an external grade door separating it from the main property – what better way to do this than with a bi-fold door? When closed an internal bi-fold door will allow you to see into your conservatory and, of course, allow natural light into your home whilst meeting the requirement to have a separate door. But when you want to access your conservatory, or merge the two rooms together, a bi-fold door will more than oblige and create one unique, open plan space.

    • There are 16 bi-fold door configuration options to choose from which each offer a slightly different functionality. The intended location, purpose and frequency of use will have a bearing on the best configuration of bi-fold door for you. Although there is something satisfying and ritualistic about opening a bi-fold door to its full capacity, we understand that it must also offer a more practical way of entering or leaving the house which is why we offer configurations with integrated ‘pass’ doors or double French doors which are perfect for everyday comings and goings.

    • An integrated pass door is available on bi-fold doors with three, five or seven panes. Thanks to the odd number of panes, one of them can integrated as a single hinged door which functions much like a normal door on your home, independently of the other bi-folding panes. Depending on which configuration you choose, the hinged pass door will either open in the same direction or the opposite direction to the bi-folding panes. In either case the inclusion of a pass door does not inhibit the full opening of the complete bi-fold door.

    • If you cannot choose between a traditional French door or a contemporary bi-fold door, why not have both? Bi-Fold doors with four or six panes can feature an integrated pair of French doors which operate both in the traditional way and as bi-folding doors too.  Choosing bi-fold doors with integrated French doors gives you so many different functionalities – open just one half of the French doors for quick access; open them both; or perform the full concertina operation of the bi-fold door and completely remove the divide between the indoors and outdoors.

    • According to your exact needs our bi-fold doors can be manufactured to open either open-in or open-out. This terminology refers to the place in which the panes are grouped when the door is open and they can either group inside the room (open-in) or outside of it (open-out). The direction in which the doors open often comes down to personal preference but the vast majority of people choose the open-out so that internal furniture and other household items can be positioned in close proximity to the bi-fold door without impeding its full operation. Your design consultant will be able to offer more helpful advice when it comes to making this decision.

    • Bi-fold doors can be made with as few as two panes. There is only one configuration for a 2 pane bi-fold door but, as with all bi-fold doors, this configuration can be manufactured to either open-out or open-in. This minimalist style of bi-fold door could be used internally to connect a room with an orangery or conservatory, or it could be used on one of the smaller facets of an orangery or conservatory.

    • If you decide on a three pane bi-fold door there are two configurations that you can choose from. The 330 configuration is one of the most popular styles of them all; a hinged pass door opens in the same direction as two bi-folding panes to excellent effect. The alternative is known as 312 configuration and the key difference is that the hinge pass door opens in the opposite direction to the two bi-folding panes.

    • 4 panel bi-fold doors present three choices of configuration: 440, 413 and 422. A 440 comprises of 4 bi-folding panes which all concertina in the same direction, whereas with a 422 door, two sets of two panes fold in the opposite direction one another. The 413 configuration boasts an integrated French door which means that one of the hinged doors opens in the opposite direction to the other three door panes.

    • If your property facilitates a 5 pane bi-fold door there are three possible configurations to choose from: 550, 514, 532. On a 550 door the first pane is a hinged pass door that opens in the same direction as the four folding panes – this is in contrast to a 514 door where the hinged passenger door opens in the opposite direction to the four folding panes. The 532 is a little more complex - the central pane acts as the pass door, with two bi-folding panes either side of it.

    • For a large scale 6 pane bi-fold you will need to choose one of three configurations. The 660 configuration has six bi-folding panes, all moving in the same direction, as opposed to a 615 which features and integrated French door at one end with the main pass door opening in the opposite direction to the other five panes. Perfect symmetry is created by a 633 configurations with two bi-folding panes either side of a central French door.

    • Perhaps unsurprisingly 7 pane bi-folds offer the most choice – there are four configurations available. One hinged pass door and six bi-folding sections concertina in one direction with a 770 configuration, whereas the hinged pass door opens in the opposite direction to the other panes on the 716 option. A 734 configuration has on offset pass door at pane three, adjoined to two bi-folding panes and a 725 configuration also has an offset pass door at pane three but it is instead connected to four bi-folding panes.

Add to the wow factor of a bi-fold door with your choice of colour...

    • The colour options for bi-fold doors are as varied as the configuration options and your first choice will be whether to opt for a sublimated woodgrain finish of Walnut, Rosewood or Oak, or a powder coated colour finish which gives you a wider array of possibilities. Dual-colour finishes are, as the name suggests, are one colour on the inside and another on the outside so that you can complement both your internal décor and outdoor space with the most appropriate shade.

    • Our standard colour palette for bi-fold doors includes three extremely popular and timeless options: gloss white, matt grey and matt black. Grey in particular is a firm favourite for homeowners investing in bi-fold doors – it is sophisticated and contemporary, therefore complementing the sleek operation of the product. A much broader selection is available but the common denominator of all of our colour options is a low maintenance, durable finish that will retain its appeal for years to come.

    • Our three sublimated woodgrain finishes replicate the appearance of real timber to such an extent that you could be forgiven for questioning whether our bi-fold doors are actually made from aluminium. The contours and shading naturally present on timber products is emulated incredibly by our aluminium counterparts using a finishing process known as sublimation, and the options of Walnut, Rosewood and Oak will appeal to homeowners who want to marry a traditional appearance with modern functionality using one of our woodgrain bi-fold doors.

    • The external face of a bi-fold door must complement the external architectural features of your property, and the inside face must complement the internal décor of the room in which it is fitted – one colour may not necessarily suffice so you may want to consider a dual colour bi-fold door which, as the name suggests, is one colour on the inside and a different colour on the outside. A very popular example of this is ‘grey-on-white’ – matt grey on the outside, and gloss white on the inside to match skirting board, architraves and neutrally decorated rooms. Likewise, you colour opt for a woodgrain finish on-white so that the external woodgrain face of the door is more in tune with the plants, trees and wildlife in your garden.

    • Most configurations of bi-fold door will involve the use of three different types of handle. Pass doors and integrated French doors will require a master handle which will house a cylinder lock, and will be used to engage the multi-point locking system when the bi-fold door is in the closed position. Each bi-folding section will also entail the use of both a D-handle and an intermediate handle. The latter is uses to release the folding panes from the door frame when opening and, of course, re-engage them when closing. A D-handle is used to push or pull the folding panes as appropriate. Within our hardware range we offer both contemporary and traditional master handles which are colour matched by the intermediate and D-handles.

      For help & advice call 01562 60800

    • Our contemporary, two-part handles owe their styling to both the brushed steel finish which is the epitome of sophistication, and a separate escutcheon plate which encases the cylinder lock. Three variations of this handle are available, each one intricately and ergonomically different to the next. Suited brushed steel intermediate and D-handles are the automatic choice if you opt for a contemporary master handle.

      For help & advice call 01562 60800

    • Traditional all-in-one handles are understated, unfussy and available in chrome, gold, black and white which is particularly useful if you wish to match the hardware used on your bi-fold door with the hardware used your windows and other doors in your house. Again, colour matched intermediate and D-handles are available in chrome, gold, black and white so that the various panes of your bi-fold door are in harmony with one another.

  • Wide-span bi-fold doors offer fantastic accessibility by definition...

Wide-span bi-fold doors offer fantastic accessibility by definition...

The ease of operation and wide aperture created when a bi-fold door is open means that these doors can drastically improve a home’s accessibility. The sliding operation of a bi-fold door relies on a high quality stainless steel track on which quad rollers, which are fitted to the door leafs, glide along without resistance. The same quad rollers are fitted with a small brush on one end to keep the tracks free of dust and dirt and magnetic catches stop hinged pass doors from blowing shut. More important than that however is the low aluminium threshold that is available with our bi-fold doors which sits almost even with floor level so that a seamless passage can be made by all guests including wheelchair users.

Style does not come at the expense of security with our bi-fold doors...

A multi-point locking system is at the heart of the security of a bi-fold door. When the lock is engaged, it does so at several different points, in several different directions, and into robust lock keeps to ensure that the door sash is firmly fixed into the door frame. The double glazed or triple glazed units used to glaze the doors are inherently very strong and tough to break, these units can be internally beaded meaning that the bead and glass pane could only be removed by someone who is already in your house. Tested cylinder locks are housed by high security master handles to deter and resist would-be intruders.

  • Built-in thermal efficiency minimise heat loss from your home...

Built-in thermal efficiency minimise heat loss from your home...

Large bi-fold doors can account for a significant proportion of a walls surface area so it is important that they act well as an insulator, keeping your home warm by preventing heat loss. Our bi-fold doors can be specified with either double or triple glazing and both options act in much the same way, reflecting heat back into your room as it tries to escape through the glass. The cavity between the two (or three) panes of glass is filled with an inert gas called argon which, being a dense gas, is much better than dry air at controlling the transfer of heat.

Intelligently designed seals and gaskets prevent leakage at the point where two panes of a bi-fold meet, and the door itself is thermally broken which means that the aluminium frames and sashes are built with a centrally integrated polyamide barrier to stop the aluminium conducting heat.
