When Donald and Melissa Kingsman acquired a property in a beautiful rural village outside Stourbridge, they saw beyond the “tired and old” exterior. Their vision was clear: transform a house in need of modernisation into a contemporary sanctuary. By opening up the ceilings to create dramatic vaulted spaces, they laid the groundwork for a home defined by light, height, and breathtaking vistas. If that wasn’t enough light, why not take off a flat roof and replace it with a fantastic Ultraframe lantern roof. This transformation knew no bounds.

Maximising the Vista with Slimline Aluminium

To truly “graduate with honours,” the property needed windows that could frame the rural landscape without interference. Our 5 Star designer recommended slimline aluminium frames from one of our three aluminium ranges. By choosing the slimmest profiles available, the Kingsmans ensured that the focus remained on the view, achieving that sought-after contemporary vibe while maintaining structural integrity. This allows for massive glass vistas that flood the home with light without sacrificing thermal efficiency and yet still keeping the interior comfortable throughout the seasons. The architectural highlights of this project include the stunning Crittal style gable windows and a row of three dormer windows. For the ground floor, the family opted for modern sliders over bi-folds. These two and three-pane sliding doors offer ultimate flexibility as they can slide or stack left, right, or even in the centre. This is a perfect solution for rural, windy locations, offering effortless operation and uninterrupted views of the Clent Hills.

A Home to be Proud Of: Grant and Sally’s New Vibe

Beyond the architectural glass and thermal efficiency, this modernisation was about creating a space where the whole family felt a sense of pride. For the Kingsmans’ two teenagers, Grant and Sally, the “tired” feel of the original house never quite matched the energy of their lives. They longed for a home with a real “wow factor”, a place where they could confidently bring friends back and enjoy their own rooms. This transformation achieved exactly that, moving from a dated property to a contemporary hub that Grant and Sally are also proud to call home.
