Common Doorย Questions

5 Star knows everything there is to know about doors. Our FAQโ€™s section has answers to typical door-related questions.

Are all composite doors pretty much the same?

No, that isnโ€™t the case. A standard composite door has an average depth of 44mm and foam filling. Very lightweight, it also has a GRP colour skin (commonly known as fibreglass).

In contrast, a solid core Fortรฉ composite door consists of laminated timber layers, making it tougher and more robust than a foam-filled composite door. It also has a UPVC skin, making it easy to colour match the design to your door frame.

There will be a price difference between the two options. Talk to a 5 Star advisor to decide what form of composite door will be best for your home.

Is it possible to have different colours inside and out?

Very often, yes, you can have contrasting colours on the inside and outside of the door. So, if you want a red finish externally and white colour internally, that shouldnโ€™t be a problem. Go wild with colour! Find out exactly whatโ€™s possible by chatting through the many colour options with a 5 Star advisor.

Common questions about doors

We always endeavour to answer any questions that our customers have. For convenience, here are answers to some of the most common door questions we get.

1. How many keys are supplied?

We will provide you with 3 keys as standard. You can ask for more keys at the time of ordering, or you can come back to us for more keys in the future, if you need them.

2. Can I have keys that work with both doors? (Suited)

No problem at all. Please, just notify the 5 Star advisor during the ordering process and they will get a suited set of keys organised so you can use the same key for both doors.

3. What is Secured by Design?

An official police-run initiative, Secured by Design (SBD) is focused on enhancing the security of buildings and their surroundings to provide occupants with more secure places to live.

SBDโ€™s product-based accreditation scheme โ€“ the Police Preferred Specification โ€“provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime. Domestic windows and doors, and their components e.g., locks and hinges, are included in this.

Conservatory Outlet (part of the Conservatory Outlet Group), our sister manufacturing company, is an accredited member of Secured by Design, so many products in our range comply with SBD standards. Speak to a 5 Star advisor if you have concerns about home security.

4. What is a 3-star rated door barrel?

It is highest rated door cylinder around and has been rigorously tested to ensure it offers maximum security against break-ins. All of our door cylinders include snap-secure technology with a lockdown mode, which stops the barrel from being compromised.

5. Is it possible to completely fold back a French door?

It most definitely can if it has an egress hinge, which lets you fully fold back the doors to give you a superb view of the outdoors.

6. Would I be better buying sliding patio or bi-folding doors?

If you have the luxury of space in a rear wall, bi-folding doors and sliding patio doors will slot in nicely and provide you with a vast external opening. With a bi-folding door, you can create a wholly unrestricted opening as the doors will completely fold back. The slender frames in a sliding patio door mean that even when the door is closed, you still get a generous view through the design. Canโ€™t decide between one door over the other? A discussion with a 5 Star advisor may help.

7. Is 5 Star Windows & Conservatories a member of FENSA?

Yes, 5 Star have been members of FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme) for several years now. Our FENSA number is 35194. The scheme was set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and various other industry bodies and is Government-endorsed.

It is a legal requirement that any replacement windows and doors comply with current thermal performance standards, and you will also need a FENSA certificate.

Being a FENSA member also entitles us to self-certify compliance with building regulations for any replacement window & door installation.

8. Do you offer finance to help me pay for windows and doors?

Yes. To make life easy for you, 5 Star can arrange a variety of affordable and convenient easy payment finance options (subject to application & status). Applying for finance is simple and we promise you a quick decision. Everything can be sorted out with you in the comfort of your home or at your local 5 Star Showroom, so you can enjoy whatever youโ€™ve set your heart on right away.

9. What do we need to do when our finance is approved?

If youโ€™re arranging your own finance, youโ€™ll need to call us as soon as you get the go ahead. If youโ€™re taking up one of our offers, the company will tell us both directly, so thereโ€™s no need to call as we will get in touch with you.

10. What happens if finance is refused?

Finance companies can turn down people for lots of reasons, for example if youโ€™ve moved several times over the past few years. In these circumstances, we always do our best to help and sometimes itโ€™s worth trying another provider, especially if they know you.

11. Iโ€™ve applied for finance with 5 Star Windows & Doors. How long will approval take?

Sometimes our finance company will say โ€˜yesโ€™ almost immediately and on other occasions it may take them a few days. This short delay can be for any number of reasons and you should not be unduly concerned.
