What is a standard door size?
There isn’t one universal “standard” door size in the UK, but several common sizes are used by homeowners and manufacturers.
In England and Wales, the most popular width is 2’6” (30 inches or 762mm), while in Scotland doors are often slightly narrower at 28.5 inches (726mm).
What’s classed as “standard” can also vary by installer, depending on their product range and fitting style. At 5 Star, all our doors are made-to-measure, so we’re well equipped to handle non-standard openings.
Standard Internal Door Sizes
In the UK, standard internal door sizes still use a mix of metric and imperial terms. For instance, a door described as “2 ft 6” (often seen in older properties or from certain suppliers) is simply 762 mm in metric.
Across England and Wales, imperial sizes such as 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are typical, while Scotland tends to favour metric measurements, especially in newer builds, where 2040 mm-high doors are the norm.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
When it comes to UK front and back doors, there’s a reliable range of standard sizes. Most external doors start at 1981 mm tall, with widths between 610 mm and 926 mm, perfect for traditional openings and easy replacements with off-the-shelf frames.
There’s also the taller 2040 mm series, common in modern Scottish new-builds and increasingly popular in homes chasing a contemporary, spacious look.

Timber doors usually range from 44 mm to 56 mm, composite doors from around 44 mm to 70 mm, while UPVC slabs are generally slimmer.
