Olive Grey Conservatory in Malvern

In the summer, the conservatory turned into an oven and unusable just when they most wanted to enjoy the space. In the winter, the reverse happened.  It left them asking the question so many homeowners ask: “Why did we ever have this thing built in the first place?”

A Different Kind of Conversation

Before speaking with the 5 Star design consultant, Vanessa and Mike worried that upgrading might just be a waste of time and worse, money.  The turning point came when 5 Star arrived. Ross, the Designer, took the time to understand the couple’s frustrations, the temperature extremes, and how they wanted to use the space. Ross didn’t try to sell them a quick fix on the spot. Instead, he went away to investigate and design a solution that would solve their issues once and for all.

The “Top Hat” Breakthrough

They had recently invested in upgrading their main home with 5 Star’s flush casement windows, but hadn’t realised that their tired old conservatory could be completely transformed using the same colour and style.

Just under a week later, Ross returned with a clever blueprint, and smart photos created using AI showing the completed project before the order was placed. He proposed what he called a complete “Top Hat” replacement.  Rather than just swapping the roof, 5 Star would replace the roof, the glazed walls, and the doors entirely. However, by keeping the original dwarf wall and base plus floor tiles, they massively reduced the overall cost of the project while delivering what looks and feels like a brand-new extension.

Seamless Architectural Matching

The new structure features stunning Olive Grey flush casement windows and doors from 5 Star’s Envisage range. The matching UPVC French doors look exceptional, accented with sleek black handles and hinges.  To top it off, the tiled roof from Ultraframe’s Ultraroof was installed using Harvest Brown tiles contrasting perfectly with the property’s original 1990s brickwork.

Clever Use of Light

A common worry with installing a solid, insulated roof is the loss of natural light in the adjoining rooms. The 5 Star design team solved this brilliantly by incorporating two self-cleaning glass roof panels directly above the internal opening. This floods the adjoining living spaces with natural light while still delivering the massive thermal benefits of a fully insulated solid roof.

Today, the room is no longer a fairweather conservatory, it is a fully integrated part of the home. Because the temperature is now stable and controllable, the internal doors connecting the house to the new room remain open all year round. The change has won unanimous approval from the entire family including Rusty, the family Jack Russell. His dog basket has officially been moved out into the new garden room full-time, where he happily spends hours every day, 12 months a year.

Mike and Vanessa went from thinking an upgrade was a waste of time to enjoying a beautiful, comfortable room that has expanded the footprint of their living space.
