The Energy Efficiency Guide

The Energy Efficiency Guide

A plan was recently announced to tackle the crippling cost of energy, capping the price of energy at £2,500 a year for a typical household.

Following this announcement, Which? estimates that those who use a ‘medium’ amount of energy will save an average of £1000, compared to when the price cap was expected to continue rising. Two weeks before the measurements were announced, Ofgem’s price cap had reached a staggering £3,549.

However, while this will feel like a relief to many, UK homes are still expected to pay unprecedented energy bills. According to Which?, the new average unit rates (for direct debit customers) will be 34p per kWh for electricity with an average standing charge of 46p per day and 10.3p per kWh for gas with an average standing charge of 28p per day.

With winter fast approaching, 5 Star has three energy-saving tips that will help you lower your usage and keep your bills at a manageable level.

Reduce your showering time

A simple way to reduce your energy bills is to cut a few minutes off your showers – even just 2 minutes less can make a noticeable difference to your yearly outgoings.

Don’t forget to set a timer! The recommended shower time for our skin is 5 to 10 minutes.

Consume less energy with shorter showers

Dry your washing on a line outside

2022 has been one of the driest years on record, so let’s hope it continues! Drying your clothes outside rather than using a tumble dryer will make a big difference to your energy usage.

Even drying your clothes on your radiator will use more energy than using a washing line as your radiators will need to work harder to heat your home. Additionally, drying your clothes inside could increase the condensation on your windows.

Save energy by drying washing outside

Invest in energy-efficient windows & doors

And finally, the solution that is most likely to make a big difference is replacing your poorly insulated windows and doors.

5 Star provides the latest in energy-efficient products, helping you to reduce your reliance on large amounts of energy and cut your heating bills. Our intelligent glazing and high-performance frames will retain heat within your home, so you won’t need to turn up the heating all winter long.
